To Make and Be Received: Analyzing the Artistic Process

SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is thrilled to announce To Make and Be Received: Analyzing the Artistic Process, an exhibition curated by Tom Walton.

Our opening reception will take place on October 2nd from 5-7PM, with a closing talk following later in the month on October 30th from 5-7PM.

To Make and Be Received includes 7 artists from a variety of disciplines: installation, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and photography.  These artists actively pursue the relationship between the conscious and unconscious realms in their work. Their visual language is specific and personal, yet open to interpretation.

This exhibition invites the audience to first look at the artist's work, and without titles or artist’s statements, leave written reflections on paper in response to the work. Then, the audience listens to interviews with the artists. This process reveals the personal expression of the artist and the personal reception of the audience, and where the two might overlap.

When an artist excavates their personal unconscious, the themes explored can tap into the collective unconscious. Psychologist Carl Jung refers to this concept as synchronistic phenomena. Through the subjective acts of making and viewing art, there can be an empathetic connection between the viewer and the artist, when shared emotions and experiences are brought to the surface.

At a time where our differences seem heightened, perhaps sharing our internal landscape can reveal what we have in common.

Artists in the exhibition include:

Diane Appaix-Castro

Jessica Lynne Brown

Brooke Cassady

Danielle Fauth

Ben Hamburger

Keir Johnston

Eric Whitaker

To Make and Be Received: Analyzing the Artistic Process will be available until November 5th!
